Who we are as Brothers

Before you were conceived in your mother’s womb, God set you aside for a special purpose – your vocation. However, like any major life choice, the decision to enter religious life is a gradual process that unfolds in a number of stages.

We take vows of poverty, celibacy and obedience as a way of giving ourselves more creatively and intimately to the mission of our Savior Jesus Christ, His Body – the Church, and the needs of the world.

We live in community as a visible witness to the commandments, which Jesus gives us to love one another. Community enables us, through prayer, personal support and finances to be accountable in our lives and mission.

The Congregation of Holy Cross identifies its concern for justice and peace in the world and the need of people to find ways to live an integrated life of faith and action. As Brothers of Holy Cross, we choose to respond to this concern through ministries which educate and sensitize persons to the need of the world for justice and peace.

We seek the Reign of God among all peoples. We work to enable other members of the laity to assume their God-given role in service of the Lord – some of whom will be lay Associates of the Midwest Province; others we hope, will choose to become religious.

Extraordinary Lives, Bringing Hope to Others

The Brothers of Holy Cross are members of an international congregation of Catholic religious brothers and priests who lead extraordinary lives by bringing hope to others. Devoted to God through our ministry and prayer, we strive to make a difference in the world by being present and available to the people and communities we serve.

Although ministry is essential to the life of a brother or priest in Holy Cross, it does not define our life. Rather, it is our lifestyle that makes us unique – we take this extraordinary journey of faith together. Abroad or at home, Holy Cross men live in community. In good times or challenging times, we can always count on our fellow brothers for support and encouragement.

“What is more delicate and more sacred than a vocation?

Vocations come from God, humans cannot give them.”

We put our Christian faith and values into practice

We were already His, for we bore the name of Christians. We had already been initiated into His church. We had been washed in baptism and confirmed in our belief and given the eucharistic nourishment in memory of Him. But there seemed to come a time when the Lord was calling us to take some further step.

We heard a summons to give over our lives in a more explicit way. It was a call to serve all people, believers and unbelievers alike. We would serve them out of our own faith that the Lord had loved us and died for us and risen for us and that He offers us a share in his life, a life more powerful and enduring than any sin or death.
